J. Clarke Publishing Company Following in the footsteps of his father, Stanley C. E. Smith has thoroughly demonstrated his executive ability and is an important factor in the management of the Smith & Valley Iron Works Company of Portland, a pioneer industry known throughout the Pacific northwest. He was born in this city in 1886 and represents one of its old and highly respected families. His parents, Charles E. and Hedwig Anna (Hansen) Smith, were natives respectively of Switzerland and Denmark and in early life were brought to the United States. Late in the '50s they traveled to California and soon afterward settled in Portland. In 1883 they moved from the corner of First and Harrison streets to a house at Second and Hooker streets and in that residence their son Stanley was born. In 1862 Charles E. and Ferdinand C. Smith embarked in business in Portland, becoming the proprietors of what was known as the Smith Brothers Iron Works. The name was afterward changed to the Smith & Watson Iron Works, which in turn was succeeded by the Smith & Valley Iron Works Company. To the upbuilding of this industry Charles E. Smith devoted his attentions until his death in 1912. His widow is still a resident of Portland. After the completion of his preparatory school course Stanley C. E. Smith matriculated in the University of Oregon, taking up the study of law. He abandoned the profession for a business career, entering the Smith & Watson Iron Works in 1911, and soon assimilated the details of the industry, of which he has been manager since 1916. On January 1, 1927, he was elected first vice president of the corporation, of which his brother, W. G. E. Smith is the president and treasurer, while H. W. Bates acts as secretary. This is one of the oldest firms on the Pacific coast engaged in the manufacture of logging machinery without change of ownership and the fact that the business has endured for over six decades establishes the ability of the men who control the industry and the quality of service rendered by the corporation. Stanley C. E. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Ethella Stoughton Stearns, a daughter of Don and Abbie (Stoughton) Stearns, born in the vicinity of Scappoose, Oregon. Mr. Stearns was the founder of the Portland Bee, conducting the paper for several years, and later the name was changed to the Portland Telegram. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two children, Charles Eliot and Judith Margaret. Mr. Smith casts his ballot for the candidates of the republican party and lends the weight of his support to all movements for Portland's growth and betterment. He enjoys the social side of life and is a member of the Arlington Club and the Oswego Golf Club. In Masonry he holds the thirty-second degree and shapes his conduct by the beneficent teachings of the order. Mr. Smith is the possessor of a pleasing personality and his genuine worth is attested by all who have been brought within the sphere of his influence.
