ALAN WELCH SMITH, who has been a prominent representative of the medical fraternity in Portland during the past quarter of a century, has specialized in surgery and has gained an enviable reputation in this field of professional work. He was born in Dunkirk, Calvert county, Maryland, in 1871, a son of John Sparrow and Ruth Eleanor (Owens) Smith. The father, whose natal year was 1832, was successfully engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery to the time of his death, which occurred in 1887. The mother passed away in 1878. Their family numbered three sons and two daughters, namely: Alan Welch, of this review; F. O., congressman of Maryland; Robert P., who is in charge of the Veterans Bureau at Helena, Montana; Mrs. Gertrude Graham, who is dean of the Girls' Polytechnic School in Portland; and Mrs. W. L. Smith, of Lexington, Virginia. Alan W. Smith received his early education under a private tutor at the place of his nativity and subsequently entered upon preparation for a professional career as a student in the University of Maryland, from which he was graduated with the degree of M. D. in 1895. He pursued postgraduate work in Johns Hopkins University, was interne at Mercy Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland, and thereafter served in the United States Marine Hospital for a period of eight years. It was in 1903 that he located for practice in Portland, where he has remained continuously to the present time and enjoys a well merited reputation as a skillful surgeon. He was honored with the presidency of the City and County Medical Society in 1909-10 and also has membership in the Oregon State Medical Association. In Portland, in 1900, Dr. Smith was united in marriage to Adele Bennett, of this city, and they are the parents of a daughter and a son, namely: Margaret B., twenty-four years of age, who was educated at Goucher College of Baltimore and in the University of Oregon; and Alan W., Jr. Dr. Smith made a splendid record as president of the board of health during the Simon and Rushlight administration. His appreciation for the social amenities of life is indicated by his membership in the Arlington Club, the University Club, the Wauna Lake Fish Club and the Bachelor Duck Island Club. He has attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite in Masonry, belongs to Harmony Lodge No. 12, F. & A. M., and is a life member of the Mystic Shrine.
