J. Clarke Publishing Company CHARLES S. SOMERVILLE, manager for F. S. Harmon & Company at Portland, is a man of marked executive ability and reliable judgment and is handling the Portland business of his company in an able and satisfactory manner. Mr. Somerville was born in Napavine, Lewis county, Washington, on the 13th of April, 1895, and is a son of Samuel S. and Sarah (Hawkins) Somerville. His parents came to the coast in the early '80s, locating in Washington, where the father was for many years engaged in the lumber business, but is now retired from active affairs and resides in Tacoma. Charles S. Somerville attended the public schools, graduating from the high school at Tacoma, and engaged in the clothing business, to which he gave his attention for two years. In July, 1917, he enlisted in the United States Navy, in which he served on the United States steamship "Great Northern," which was in the transport service, and the United States battleship "Kansas." He was honorably discharged in February, 1919, after which he entered the employ of F. S. Harmon & Company at Seattle and was with that concern two years in Seattle and seven years in Tacoma, working as a city salesman in the latter city. In September, 1927, he was made manager of the Portland office, in which position he is still serving. F. S. Harmon & Company was founded in Tacoma, Washington, in 1883, and is one of the largest manufacturers and sellers of furniture in the entire northwest. Its Portland branch was established in 1898 and in 1904 the business here was moved into its present building, at Johnson and Fourteenth streets, where it occupies five floors, one hundred by two hundred feet in size, embracing one hundred and twenty thousand square feet of space. The firm carries a large and complete line of furniture, which it sells wholesale exclusively, and has five traveling salesman covering the Portland territory, which includes northern California, all of Oregon, the southern part of Idaho and south-western Washington. The company's factory is located in Tacoma and its export business is done through that port. In July, 1920, Mr. Somerville was united in marriage to Miss Belle Winston, of Jackson, Tennessee, and they are the parents of two children, Barbara Ann and Diana Patricia. Mr. Somerville gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He holds a responsible position and is a very busy man, but at the same time maintains a helpful interest in everything concerning the prosperity and welfare of his community. His business record has been a creditable one and all who know him hold him in the highest regard.
