Clarke Publishing Company CARL C. STEIN, who conducts one of the leading bakeries in Portland, has attained success through the high quality of his products, his close application, and his progressive and enterprising business methods. He was born in Germany on the 18th of May, 1868, and is a son of Gotlieb and Matilda (Pfefferkorn) Stein. His father was a cabinetmaker by trade, became an unusually skilled workman and followed that line in Germany until 1892, when he and his wife came to Portland and thereafter made their home with their son, Carl C., until their deaths. Carl Stein received a public school education in his native land and in 1885, when seventeen years of age, emigrated to the United States, coming direct to Portland, of which city he has been a resident continuously since. He learned the baking business with Fisher of the California Bakery, after which he was employed in various bakeries in this city. On September 17, 1888, he entered into a partnership with Max Ruble and established the Vienna bakery at Sixteenth and Overton streets. Six months later Mr. Stein became the sole owner of the business, which he carried on alone until 1901, when his brother Hartman became a partner and the business was operated under the name of Stein Brothers until Hartman's death, in 1923, since which time it has been known as Stein's bakery. Recently Mr. Stein took into the business his two nephews, Ernest and William Stein. In 1912 he built a new plant, to which he has made additions from time to time, and in 1927 erected a brick building, fifty by fifty feet, so that the plant now covers a space one hundred by one hundred feet. He employs nineteen people and has seven delivery wagons. The public was not slow in recognizing the superior quality of the Stein products and through the years the business has steadily grown, being now regarded as one of the most prosperous concerns in its line in Portland. Mr. Stein was united in marriage to Miss Ida Wehner, who is a native of Germany, but has been a resident of Portland since girlhood. To them have been born five children, namely: Mary, Helen, Louise, Paul and Dorris. Mr. Stein gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Sons of Herman, the Turnverein and the Chamber of Commerce. Though he has been closely devoted to his business, he has not neglected his obligations as a citizen and has given his support to all measures for the betterment of the community and the advancement of the public welfare. For these reasons, as well as for his excellent personal qualities, he commands the respect and good will of all who know him and is deservedly popular among his associates and friends.
