Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 19, 2010, 9:48 pm Source: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 307 - 308 Author: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company DAVID H. STROWBRIDGE conducts both a wholesale and retail business as head of the Strowbridge Hardware & Paint Company of Portland, which is now the oldest concern of the kind on the east side, having been started by the present proprietor thirty-six years ago. He is a native of Sharon, Pennsylvania, where his parents were among the early settlers, and in the schools of that place he acquired his education. His initial experience in the business world was gained during a number of years' service as a bookkeeper. It was about 1890 that he came to Portland and about two years later he opened a store for the sale of paints, oils, sash and doors on Union avenue, whence a few years afterward he removed to Grand avenue. About 1912 he erected his present building at 106 Grand avenue, where he now occupies twenty-one thousand square feet of floor space. The enterprise has always been conducted within two blocks of the original location. Twenty years ago Mr. Strowbridge began dealing in hardware, which has since become the most important feature of the business. Wholesale shipments of paints, oils, lead and a certain line of hardware are made throughout Oregon and southwestern Washington, and employment is furnished to about fifteen people. The Strowbridge Hardware & Paint Company now handles a complete line of small hardware, kitchen hardware, china, paints, oils, glass, varnishes, etc., and an extensive and profitable trade has been developed in these commodities under the capable direction of the founder and head of the business. In early manhood Mr. Strowbridge was united in marriage, in Portland, to Miss Birdell Lott, who had come to this city four or five years prior to the arrival of her future husband. They are the parents of a son and a daughter. Edwin D., now associated with his father in business, was married in Portland and has a son, Edwin David. Irene is the wife of H. E. Wheeler, of Portland, and the mother of a son, David Harold. A worthy exemplar of the teachings and purposes of the Masonic fraternity, Mr. Strowbridge has taken the degrees of both the York and Scottish rites and has crossed the sands of the desert with the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Moreover, he is a valued member of the East Side Commercial Club and has at all times exerted his influence in behalf of the community advancement, while his personal characteristics are such as have won for him a large circle of warm friends in his adopted city.
