THORFINN THARALDSEN, successfully engaged in the general practice of medicine and surgery in Portland, was born at Battle Lake, Minnesota, in 1879, a son of Ivor and Emily (Engerud) Tharaldsen, who were married in Racine, Wisconsin, and are now deceased. The father was a preacher of the gospel. In the family were three sons and a daughter, namely: Agott Tharaldsen, who is a teacher of music in New York; Thorfinn Tharaldsen, of this review; Conrad Tharaldsen, who is a professor of anatomy in the New York Medical College; and Hjalmar Tharaldsen, sales manager for the Cameron Supply Company of Chicago. Thorfinn Tharaldsen acquired his early education at the place of his nativity and subsequently matriculated in the University of Minnesota, from which instituŽtion he was graduated in 1902 on the completion of a course in medicine. After spending two years as an interne in St. Mary's Hospital of Minneapolis he located for the practice of his chosen profession at Cottonwood, Minnesota, where he reŽmained for eleven years. When the United States became involved in the World war in 1917 he joined the army and was stationed at Fort Riley and Camp Funston. He organized the S. P. D. Sanitary Department in the army; was in charge of the Auditorium Hospital for the city of Portland during the flu epidemic in 1918-19, and following his honorable discharge was associated with Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen, to which organization he gave his professional services until 1921. In that year he became associated in the practice of medicine with Dr. G. T. Trommald but since the latter's death in 1922 has carried on his work alone and is widely recognized as one of Portland's most capable and skilled physicians and surgeons. Dr. Tharaldsen is surgeon for the Inman-Poulson Lumber Company of Portland and for the Portland Shipbuilding Company. With the onward march of his profession he keeps in close touch through his membership in the Portland Medical Society, the Multnomah County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Academy of Medicine. His name is also on the membership roll of the American Legion. At Minneapolis, in 1904, Dr. Tharaldsen was united in marriage to Mabelle Olsen, who was born at Battle Lake, Minnesota, but was educated in Minneapolis. Their daughter, Kathleen Virginia, has completed the junior year at the University of Oregon and is a member of the Kappa Gamma sorority.
