Clarke Publishing Company D. VANCE, associated with the O'Brien-Eckert Barbers Supply Company of Portland, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1879, a son of William A. and Mary E. (Piper) Vance, both of whom are deceased. The father devoted his attention to the contracting business throughout his active life. His family numbered two sons, D. and Myron E. D. Vance attended the schools of his native city in the acquirement of an education and it was as a factory employe there that he began learning the barbers' supply business, which has since claimed his time and energies. In 1906 he left the mid-west metropolis for Portland, Oregon, and after twelve years' residence here spent a period of eight years in business in the city of San Francisco. In 1925 he returned to Portland and formed his present connection with the O'Brien-Eckert Barbers Supply Company which furnishes working equipment for beauty shops and barber shops. Great changes have been made in this equipment, for metal has replaced wood and considerable thought is being given to color decoration, as plain white is no longer the vogue. The barbers' supply business has been revolutionized since women began bobbing their hair and many new devices have been instituted as a result. The business of the O'Brien-Eckert Company, which is showing a substantial increase, covers the entire state of Oregon and part of Southern Washington. The concern is represented by two road salesmen and two city salesmen. The efforts of Mr. Vance have contributed in material measure to its continued success, for long experience has made him thoroughly familiar with every phase of the business. In Chicago, in 1904, Mr. Vance was united in marriage to Isabel Clark and they now reside at 203 Twelfth street in Portland, where they have an extensive circle of warm friends.
