Clarke Publishing Company EDMUND J. WHELAN, cashier of the Peninsula National Bank of Portland, has gained recognition in banking circles as a man of clear headed judgment and sound discretion, his promotion to his present responsible position coming in recognition of previous loyal and efficient service with that institution. Mr. Whelan was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on the 18th of February, 1897, and is a son of William E. and Sarah (Flood) Whelan. The family came to Portland in 1910 and here the father engaged in the contracting business to the time of his death. His widow now resides in San Francisco, California. Edmund J. Whelan attended the public schools, after which he was a student in Columbia University, at Portland. His first regular employment was in the passenger department of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which line of work he followed for a year and a half. In 1920 he came to Portland and entered the Peninsula National Bank, at St. Johns, of which he became cashier in April, 1927. In June, 1924, Mr. Whelan was united in marriage to Miss Hildegard Dyrand, who is a native of Portland, and they are the parents of a son, Edward J. Mr. Whelan is a member of the Portland Lodge, B. P. O. E., and the Columbia Country Club. He is a republican in his political views, is greatly interested in public matters as relating to the welfare and prosperity of his city, and is held in the highest measure of regard by all who know him.
