     JOHN P. WINTER.  In the field of professional service John P. Winter has 
made continuous progress, wisely utilizing the talents with which nature 
endowed him, and is accorded a position of prominence in legal circles of 
Portland. A native of Iowa, he was born February 11, 1871, in Fayette county 
and his parents, Peter and Mary (Scholen) Winter, are deceased. He was reared 
on his father's farm and supplemented his public school training by attendance 
at the University of Minnesota, later entering the University of Missouri, 
from which he was graduated in 1897 with the degree of LL.B. After his 
admission to the bar Mr. Winter returned to Minnesota and located in Perham, 
where he followed his profession for about seven years. In the spring of 1904 
he came to Oregon and for ten years thereafter maintained a law office in 
Pendleton. Since 1914 he has practiced in Portland and enjoys an enviable 
reputation as a lawyer of ability.

     While a resident of Minnesota, Mr. Winter married Miss Elizabeth 
Schroeder, by whom he has two children: Alfred, who is associated with his 
father in the practice of law; and Marguerite. Mr. Winter is affiliated with 
the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Columbia Country Club. He 
gives his political support to the republican party. An earnest student, he is 
constantly adding to his store of legal learning and subordinates all other 
interests to the demands of his profession, in which he has attained high 
standing.
