He had just finished eating dinner and was walking about the wharf when he probably made a misstep and fell against the timbers and then into the river. As far as the police have been able to find out, no one saw the accident, and it was only when Daugherty disappeared so suddenly from the wharf that a search was made for him. Someone saw blood on the timbers and water, and it was then conjectured that Daugherty had fallen into the river. His body was recovered shortly afterward, and it was found that his skull was fractured and his right jawbone broken. He was employed by the Mutual Warehouse Company, and was to have resigned his position Saturday, as watchman, to work for another concern. He was born in Scotland and had a wide acquaintance with steamboat men, who knew him as "Scotty." A widow and four of a family survive him. ********************************************************************
