Mrs.Mary A.Small left her home on the afternoon of August 13,1903. She came to Portland on the train in company with another woman. When she parted from thsi woman she disappeared, and all the efforts of her husband to find her were of no avail. After searching the vicinty of Porland, dragging the river for her body and inquiring everywhere,Mr.Small received information which at once led him to believe that his wife had deserted him for another man.Further researches brought him to the conclusion that this man ws Frank Stice, alias John F.Thompson,a man who had served time. Descrptions of the missing woman were also published in the newspapers, and elsewhere, but Mr.Small left the city to continue his wife hunt without telling all that he knew.A man named Bush wrote to him from McMurray,Wash.,stating that Mrs.Small was in that town.In this letter he told Small that he had telegraphed immediately to Chief of Police Hunt, but had received no response.Small called upon the Chief for an explanation, but the head of the Police Department declared thathe had never heard from Bush. Leaving the city,Small finally drifted down into New Mexico, occasionally hearing of his wife, and her companion, but never catching up with them. When he learned to his entire satisfaction that she has left him to elope with another man,a motive of revenge took the place of his original desire to find his wife, and he continued the chase. Now he has gicen it up,and will ask for a legal seperation from her."That's all there is for me to do." he said yesterday. A short time before Mrs.Small quitted her home she had quarreled with her eldest daughter,Lena,a girl 16 years old.She told tow women taht she would never again enter the house so long as the gril was there. At first her husband believed that she had become demented snd had committed suicide.
