All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com April 24, 2008, 10:26 am Morning Oregonian September 10, 1904 Christian Wenninger Ends His Despondent Life Despondent because he was unable to get remunerative emploment,Christian Wenninger,aged 36 years,who ives with his mother on a small farm in the neighborhood of Bertha,hanged himself from a tree in a gove of pines within 300 yeards of his home.He committed the deed in the early morning hours of yesterday,and his body was discovered by Grace Scaquist,a little girl of the neighborhood,shortly after noon. Wenninger lefthis home about 10 o'clock Thursday morning to come to Portland.He seemed despondent and spoke to his mother about not being able to find work,Between 6 and 7 o'clock Thursday evening he was seen in the city by some members of the Sons of Herman,of which order Wenninger was a member.At that time he appeared to be in his usual good spirits,and conversed with his companions for some time.That was the last seen of him alive,and it is supposed that he strated for his home soon afterward. Yesterday shortly after noon Grace Seaquist was passiing through the grove of pines about 3oo yards from the Wenninger home,when she saw a body hanging in a tree.She went nearer and saw that it was the body of Wenninger.Frightened,she ran to the residence of Mr.Malair and told him of her find,He investigated,found the girl's story to be true,and notified Coron Finley. The coroner immediately went to Bertha,investigated the case,ordered the body cut down about 4:40 o'clock in the afternoon.The remains were brought to Portland and taken to Finley's undertaking parlors. Wenninger had evidently arrived home in a despondent condition,gone into the grove to think about his troubles,and made up his mind to suicide.He climbed a tree until he reached a branch about20 feet from the ground,tied a rope around his neck,and fastened the other end to the limb,and swung off. He was a member in good standing of the Sons of Herman and of another German socity.
