All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com September 18, 2007, 6:48 am Oregonian April 8, 1893 A Coroners Jury Finds That His Death Was Accidental Coroner Hughes yesterday afternoon held an inquest over the remains of John A.Hans,the engineer who died at Good Samaritan hospital Thursday,from the result of injuries received in the accident on the Portland and Vancouver motor line,on the East Side,Wednesday morning.The testimony showed that a heavy mist had caused the rails to become slippery and Hans was unable to control his engine.he realized the danger he was in after starting down the hill at Holladay avenue on Union avenue and reverted his lever.He also applied the air brakes,but the wheels would slide and by the time the train reached the curve at East Couch stree it was running at the rate of 30 miles and hour.All the witnesses admitted that the slippery conditions of the track was responsible for the accident. Dr.Cohen,who attended Hans,testified that before his death the engineer made a statement to the effect that the locomotive was in perfect condition,and that he was unable to control it becuase teh wheels would slide along the rails. The jury then rendered a verdict in accordance witht the above facts,exonerating the ompany of all blame. The body of Hans was placed in a handsome cloth covered casket by Coroner Hughes,and it will be buried today under the auspices of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
