All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com August 12, 2008, 10:18 pm Morning Oregonian August 5, 1904 Siletz Indian To Face New Jury- Decision By Judge Bellinger Albert Martin, the Siletz Indian accused of murdering U.S.Grant, another Indian, last October, will have another chance to evade a long term of imprisonment for United States District Jusge Bellinger granted him a new trial yesterday.Martin was recently found guilty of manslughter, while the other Indian in the case, Logan, was discharged.In making the order for the new trial, Judge Bellinger stated that he believed Logan was the more guilty of the two in accomplishing Grant's death,and it seemed to him that Martin was too drunk at the time to have committed the crime. The judge therefore concluded that Martin, who is now out on bail, ought to get the benefit of a new trial. The date of the latter has not yet been set.
