Matthews, after residing in this city for 28 years, left last evening, via the Union Pacific, for the gold mines located on East Eagle Creek in Union county, Oregon, to make arrangements for engaging in permanent business. After providing suitable quarters for the miners employed in the mines in which he is interested, he will return to this city to settle up some business matters, and then proceed East to purchase mining machinery, and will then go back to Eastern Oregon to look after his mining interests. Mr. Matthews has refused several offers of good positions in this city, preferring to take his chances in his new enterpris. It would thus appear that several street rumors lately started to the effect that Mr. Matthews was endeavoring to make a combination with a view of getting control with persons, outside of the old ring, of city and county politics from the mountains of Eastern Oregon. A host of personal friends wish him unbounded successin his new enterprise.
