Father Ctaldo Relieved of Duty in the Northwest
Spokane,Wash,Apil 25
Father J.M.Cataldo, superior general of the Rocky Mountain mission of the 
Catholic church, has been relieved at his own request, and started to Montana 
last evening to engage in Missionary work among the Crow Indians. He is 
succeeded as superior general by Father Leopold VanGor, who now has charge of 
the missions of the church in Washington,Idaho, a part of Montana and Alaska, 
with headquarters at Spokane. Father Cataldo, the retiring superior general, 
is one of the pioneer missionaries of the Northwaest, having come to 
Washington 25 years ago. He was first stationed on Peone prairie, among the 
Spokane Indians, in 1868, and after several years of successful work was 
transferred to Lapwai. In 1877 he was chosen superior general of the Rocky 
mountain missions, and has held that position until the present time.
As superior general, he has opened many missions among the Gros Ventres, 
Umatillas, Crows and Blackfeet. Several years ago he made a trip to Alaska and 
etablished several missions there which have done excellent work among the 
natives of the North. During his long term of office rpid changes in the 
country reduced his field of labor among the Indians of this district, but 
gave other opportunities for good work.Gonzaga College claims Father Cataldo 
as as its founder and owns much of its success to his acts and advice. His 
successor, Father Leopold VanGorp, has also been engaged in mission work many 
years.
