All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com May 1, 2008, 10:16 am Morning Oregonian September 14, 1904 Personated a Hold Up Man,and North Yakima Officer Shot Him North Yakima,Wash.,-Sept.13- Night Patrolman Robert S.Cayou,of this city,shot and killed George Reed,a sheepherder for the Moxee Company,at a late hour last ight.Reed was drunk and had attempted to hold up a stranger named Hamlin to scare him.Hamlin broke away and notified the patrolman,who started to investigate. He saw Reed 80 feet away and called to him to hold up his hands.Instead,Reed fired a shot at the officer.The officer then fired three shots at Reed,tow of which took effect,killing him instantly.The officer did not know but what the man was a highway man till after he had killed him. Reed was 55 years old,and had lived here for years.He always gave the poice trouble when drunk. At an inquest held this afternoon the jury returned a verdict that the shooting was justifiable.
