The records shhow that a license was issued on September 22 for J.C.Barnes,aged 41,and Mrs.Christina Jaskcey, aged 31, and the witness who signed the marriage license affadavit was Joseph Hawkins.Mr.Fields searchinf further ascertained that no marriage certificate to the effect that the marriage was duly solemnized by one authorized to do so has been returned to his office, and told the visitor so. "When Mr.Barnes proposed that we come to Portland and be married I readilt assented because I thought a great deal of him. That evening he took me to a house the location of which I am not familiar with, and the cereomy wa sperformed.Mr.Barnes expalined that the Judge was busy and could not attend the ceremony and had sent his clerk.I did not think anything was wrong, and the ceremony wa sperformed.Recently during slight disagreements with Barnes I have had reason to suspect from remarks he made that all is not as it should be and now that I find no marriage certificate has ever been returned,I am convinced." Mr.Shields sent the woman to see District Attorney Manning who will be investigating the case.
