Co. Mangled by a Freight Car J.H. Cole, a switchman in the employ of the O.R. & N., met death yesterday morning as a result of being run over by a freight car. He was in the act of running along in front of a moving string of cars, when his foot was caught in a frog. He signaled the engineer to stop, but too late to prevent his being run over, the two wheels of the forward truck crushing both thighs, the abdomen and right arm. He was conscious when picked up, and asked that word be sent to his wife, Cora Cole, 220 Ellis street, Pittsburg, Pa., as he knew he had but a few moments to live. The ambulance of St. Vincent’s hospital was sent for and the injured man tenderly lifted in, but death came to his relief before the ambulance left the East Side. An inquest was held at the morgue last evening at 7: 30, when five witnesses were examined - J.J. Fitzgerald, yardmaster; Alexander Kennedy, foreman of the switching crew; Peter Miller, engineer of the switching engine; J.R. Dem, fireman, and J.F. McKinney, switchman - and the verdict rendered attributed the death to an accident. Deceased was an American, about 37 years of age, a stranger here, and had a wife and little daughter at Pittsburg. Mrs. Cole was telegraphed yesterday as to what disposition she desired to make of the remains, and answered that she had no means to bear the expense of the transfer home. The switchman of Albina, however, have decided to stand the expense, if the widow can have the funeral arranged; if not, the interment will take place here, at the expense of his friends at the Albina yards. Mr. Cole was known here as a sober and capable switchman. He had formerly been a locomotive engineer.
