All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com April 10, 2008, 3:26 am Morning Oregonian September 3,1904 Long A Respected Citizen of Oregon Prairie City,Or.,Sept.2-(Special)- Captain D.J.Ferree,who passed away at the Blue Mountain Hot Springs,12 miles south of Prairie City,August 17,inhis 67th year,and had been a respected citizen of this state for 35 years. Captain Ferree was born in Indiana,November 30,1836.He came to Brighton,Ia.,in 1848,where,in 1858,he married Mary E.Johnson.he came to Oregon in May,1869,and settled at the Meacham tollroad (known as Lee's encampment),in Union County,where he lived for one year.He then received the appointment as superintendent of farming on the Klamath Inian Reservation,which he held for three years.Then he located a homestead at Nylox,11 miles south of Klamath Falls,which he sold in 1887.For from 10-15 years thereafter he was mail and stage contractor,and handled nearly all the stage contracts for Southern Oregon.Being a loyal Republican all his life,he was appointed an employee at the Penitentiary,at Salem,for eight years,during Governor Lord's and Governor Geer's administrations; but was ousted by the Democratic Governor,Last year he came to Prairie City,where his sons are living,on a valuable mining property. He psent the Wnter at his home in Salem. His health failed,however,and returned here to regain his health at the mineral springs;but it availed him nothing,as cancer of the liver was incurable. Mr.Ferree served four years and three months in the Army of the Rebellion,in Company A,second Iowa volunteers.He enlisted as a private soldier,but worked his way up and became Captain of the company within one year.At the close of the war he was Provost marshal,at MemphisTenn. During the Modoc war he commanded a company of Klamath Indians. Captain ferree left,besides his widow,three sons,A.B.,J.B., and F.F. Ferree,and one daughter,Mrs.E.E.Cleaver,who were all at his bedside at the time of his death,except his daughter,who is at present in Anderson,Ind. Captain Ferree became a Royal Arch Mason at Jacksonville,Or., and was buried by that order at the Oddfellows Cemetery,this city,August 19.
