Oct.25 - (Special) - Simpson Merril, who died at this place Saturday, was born August 24,1821, in Brown County, Ohio, where his youth was spent with General U. S. Grant, who was his intimate friend and schoolmate. He was given the name Simpson by General Grant's mother, after her own maiden name.In 1842 Mr. Merril was married to Miss Caline Gouhl. After lviing in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas, he came to Oregon in 1882, first locating near Scio, Linn county. Besides his wife, five chidren survive him: T. J.Merril, of Umatilla County; D. F.Merril, of North Yakima, Wash; J. B.Merril, of Prineville; Mrs. N. C.Doty, of Boise, Idaho and Mrs. D. M.Caldwell of this city.
