Meston were held yesterday at Grace church, the pastor of the church officiating. Although the deceased had no kinsman in this city nor on the coast, there were a few of his most intimate friends to follow his remains to the church, and many who had known in him in business circles and church fellowships filled the pews during the sermon, offering their last significant tribute of respect and love. The body was taken to Stockton,Cal., for burial beisde his wife's remains. John Johnson Meston came of Scottish ancestry, his father and mother being from the old town of Aberdeen. Early in this century, they came to America and made their home in Boston, where Mr. Meston was born, and where his relaitves still live. A liberal schooling in the Boston schools till the age of fifteen years, was followed by a seven years "bound" apprenticeship to the bookbindery trade. About 1860 Mr. Meston came to the coast for the improvement of his wife's health. They lived at Stockton, Cal., until her death and about 1871, with his son, Mr. Meston came to Portland, and went into business. In 1873 Charlie Meston, a promising boy,the last link of the little household was drowned. Since that time Mr. Meston has lived a busy and useful life. Among his early acquaintances and friends were Daniel Webster, Rufus Chaote, Edward Everett,and many of the historic names of the generation.
