Mrs. Minto had enjoyed good health until a week ago, when she contracted the disease with which she died. The funeral will be conducted from the family residence in South Salem at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternnon by Rev. P. S. Knight. Internment will be given in Oddfellows cememtery. Martha Morrison was a daughter of the late R. W. Morrison, of Clatsop Plains, and was born in Missouri, December 17, 1831. In 1844 Mr. Morrison organized a company of immigrants headed for Oregon and was himself chosen as captain of the company. With ox teams the homeseekers crossed the plains and mountains, arriving in Oregon the same year. The Morrison family settled on the Clatsop Plains, south of Astoria, where they have since resided. Martha was married July 8, 1847, to John Minto, a young pioneer of 1845, and they removed to Salem, near which place they took a donation land claim and built their home.The cares of a household, then up by the girl of 16, were not laid down until last Tuesday, when a sudden illness developed into pneumonia and raidly wore away the strength which had kept Mrs. Minto active beyond the allotted period of humanlife. With her husband she was a leader in the best thought and effort of the community and was highly esteemed by the pioneer woman among whom she was widely known. Early in life she became a Christian, and was a devoted member of the Methodist Church. Besides her husband, who is now in his 82nd year, she leaves the following sons and daughters: John W. Minot, Postmaster at Portland; Mrs. Mary Haley and Jasper W., Douglas C., and Harry P. Minto, all of Salem. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mary Carnahan and Mrs. Hannah Hamlin, and three brothers, William, Jefferson and Benotn Morrison, all of Clatsop County. She leaves a number of grandchildren and one great grandchild, Clifton Minto Irwin, of Portland.
