E. Monroe While Attempting to Cross a Swollen Stream. The sad news has been received at this place of the drowning of James Edward Monroe, a son of I. J. Monroe, formerly of Blanco, and a grandson of the late James Bardin. From the Roseburg, Or., Review of April 6th, we take the following account: News reached here Wednesday that J. E. Monroe, who lives on Roberts’ creek, had been drowned, but no particulars were obtainable then. Samuel Morgan, who came down from Canyonville last night, called at the Review office and stated that the accident occurred Monday at the Tiller ford, on the Southern branch, near the mouth of Elk creek, and the occurrence was reported substantially as follows: A few days before, the unfortunate man, accompanied by his father, I. J. Monroe, and three or four others whose names he did not learn, went into that country to look up a stock range, and on Monday Mr. Monroe, against the protests of his father, attempted to ford the swollen river on a scarcely broken colt. He rode bareback and near the middle of the stream the animal reared and plunged, throwing him back into the stream. He disappeared and did not rise again. The ford is not a very bad one, but the water is very cold there now and might have chilled him so that he could make no effort to escape or the horse might have trampled upon him. Although search was instituted at once, the news was received at Canyonville yesterday that the body had not yet been recovered. Mr. Monroe leaves a wife and two children.
