All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com December 24, 2007, 10:38 am Oregonian Decmber 15,1892 Died In Jail Constant Drinking Leads To Death Of M.Rogue M.Rogers,a confirmed drunkard,died at the city jail last night at 11:25 o'clock of alchoholism.He was arrested at 6:15 o'clock,in an intoxicated condition,by Officer Cole and taken to the police station,where he wa slocked up in the big cell.Soon after he was taken with a fit similiar to an epileptic fit,and Jailer Collins,becoming alarmed,sent for City Physician Wheeler.the doctor went over to the jail,but as the man seemed to be suffering only from the effects of liqour,he did not think it was necessary to do anything for him.Jailer Collins visited the man several times during the evening,and says he had a second fit between 9 and 10 o'clock.When the jailer opened the door fo the cell about 11:15 o'clock he saw the man writhing in agony on the floor.Before Dr.Wheeler arrived the man was dead.Dr.Wheeler gave as his opinion that the man died of brain trouble,due to the effects of his constant drinking.Deceased was a man of nearly 60 years of age,and has spent a night at the police station once before.He was a cook by profesion and lately been employed at the Quimby House.The coroner took charge of the remains and will probably hold an inquest today.
