The Albany local of the Southern Pacific Company had just pulled out of the station and had run about 100 feet, when a man who was standing on the rear platform of next tot he last car was seen by several gentleman to suddenly pitch forward and fall. The front steps of the last car struck him,and throwing him around ,his head and chest fell under the car, leaving his lower extremities outside the rail. The wheels passed oveer his body, crushing him ina fearful manner,No one on the trani saw the accident, and i continued on its journey, but several men at the station ran to the scene and found the man still breathing. He lived for abo ten minutes. after the accident. Coroner Holman was notified, and took charge of the body and removed it to the morgue.Dr.Fenton found that the intestines had been forced out.The spinal column was fractutred and several ribs were broken.Papers were found in his pocket that indicated his name was Thomas C.Sladden,He had a certificate grantinghim permission by examiners at Detroit,Mich., to act as chief engineer of river steamers.Bills and letter heads alos showed that in December,1892,he was proprietor of a blacksmith shop at Detroit. He also had a pawn ticket which called for tow rings on which he had secured $5 from aborker inthis city.No railroad ticket was found, and it was impsosible to ascertain what he was doing on the train.Coroner Holman could find no one who saw the man before the train pulled out,and the question as to whether he was sober is still amystery. An inquest was begun lastnight, but the witnesses called could throw no light on the accident. The coroner then deicded to postpone the investigation unitl tomorrow, for the purpose of ascertaining,if possible, whether his death was the result of an accident or suicidal intent.
