Mr.Spaulding was discovered to be seriously ill by his wife at 5:30 o'clock and Dr. R.J.Marsh was hastily summoned,but the sufferer died before anything could be done to relieve him. Yesterday afternoon the remains were taken to the home of a sister,Mrs.C.E.Sitto,493 Yamhill street,from which place the funeral will be held. The deceased had long been identified with the business life of Portland,having been one of the leading members of the Union Meat Company since its organization. He was born in Chelmsford,mass.,May 4,1839. He first entered business life in Boston and was married in that city in 1861. The following year he came to Portland,where he had since made his home. Upon first coming to this city,Mr.Spaulding was employed as a clerk in the store of Allen& Lewis. Later he went into business with A.H.Johnson.of recent years,however,mr.Spaulding was closely identified with the meat packing business of the city,being one of the men who helped in founding the Union Meat Company.he also served as president of the Northwest Meat Company. The deceased was a charter member of the First Unitarian Church of this city and was for a long time a trustee of that institution. Two sisters,Mrs.C.E.Sitton and Miss Spaulding and a brother,morton M.Spaulding,survive him. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed.
