Jeremiah Stanley, one of the first settlers of Eastern Multnomah, died suddenly at the home of his son near here on Saturday morning last. He was stricken with paralysis nearly two years ago and never fully recovered, although he so far improved as to be about until the hour of his death, when a second stroke suddenly ended his life. Mr. Stanley was born in Howard County, Missouri, January 25, 1829, from where he went to Texas with his parents while still a boy. In 1852 he came across the plains with his father and brothers and settled here upon a donation land claim which is now owned by his two sons and upon which he died. In 1865, he was married to Mrs. Lucinda Russell, six children being the fruit of their union. Mrs. Stanley died in 1895, and the following year, August 6, 1896, he was again married to Mrs. Clarissa Thorp. The second Mrs. Stanley died September 21 of last year. Since which time Mr. Stanley’s health has gradually failed until the end came as he was sitting in his easy chair. Of all his family but two sons remain, Joseph and William, who live upon the old farm with families of their own. Mr. Stanley’s life was an exemplary one and he was widely known throughout this part of the state. His funeral took place at Gresham Cemetery yesterday afternoon, several hundred persons attending the services at the Methodist Church and at the grave. Rev. M.L. Hardingham officiated.
