His wife arrived from Tacoma a few minutes after he passed away. It was known as soon as Whelan's injuries were examined at the hospital that he could not live.He was terribly burned bout the head and body and had inhaled the blast of flame whihc struck him in the face with such terrific force when the explosion occurred.His wife was wired Saturay night that he had been fatally injured,and she answered that she would come to Portland as quickly as possible. Whlan lost consciousness shortly after 6 o'clock yesterday morning,talking with the nurses before he did so,and telling them that he knew he was going to die,but longed to see his wife before he passed away. He died at 7:3 o'clock,without having regained consciousness,and his wife arrived at the hospital a short time afterward,to be told that she was too late. The body was taken to Tacoma for burial last night. Whelan was a very efficient engineer and made his home in Tacoma when not with his ship,having lived there for a number of years.He left to mourn his loss, a mother, a wife and three small children.
