Pat O'Brien,the engineer.testified that about 5:10 o'clock,while coming down Dolan's Hill at Twenty Fifth street and Hawthorne avenue,he saw a Chinaman walking along the track about 200 feet away. He rang the bell anf blew the whistle,and the Chinaman stepped off the track.When the engine got within about 30 feet of him,he suddenly stepped on the track again.The pilot beam struck him and knocked him to one side of the track.The engineer stopped the treain as soon as possible and went back to where the Chinaman was lying.Life was then extinct,a terrible wound on his head which exposed his brain having caused almost instanaeuos death. The train st the time was running about six miles an hour.The fireman was left in charge of the body and o'Brien acme to town to report thematter All the witnesses at the inquest were subjected to a close examination.The railroad company was represented by counsel,while friends of the dead man had an attorney there.It is understood that a suit for damages will be instituted at once. The evidence brought out showed that the employees of the companywere in no way criminally responsible for the accident,and the jury brought ina verdict to that effect.
