The Howland Divorce case
Mrs. Cora A. Howland was granted a divorce yesterday from Edwin Howland on the 
grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment,failure to provide and convivtion of a 
felony. This case was before the court for some time. The parties were married 
in Portland in 1888. Howland was then a soldier stationed at Vancouver 
Barracks.Shortly after his marriage he deserted the army, and force his wife 
to support him.He eluded the officers until 1891, when he was captured and 
sentenced to two years in the United States prison at Alcatraz Island, 
California
