We went to Victoria and he was employed on the Colonist. He ws supposed to get through work at 2 o'clock ans sometimes he did not come home until 8 or 9 o'clock in the morning, spending the time drinking. That caused trouble between us. My husband left me and I had to send to my father in Albany for money to come home. Mrs. Swart further testfiied that Swartz afterwards went to Omaha. When he returned she saw him and asked him id he wnted to live with her and treat her as a wife should be treated. he answered no and refused to contribute towards expenses of obtaining a divorce. He showed her a telegram signed "Bessie" which stated that Bessie would soon join him. They were married in Portland in March 1898, and the desertion began May 30,1900.
