Hubbell,of Kalama, the rest mystery, dark and profund. Or is it mystery ,or is it romance, but be it both or neither,it is done, done for the sanction of the law and the rites of the church, though no relative was witness and few friends have heard the tale. All of which means that, though there is no longer a Miss maidie Hildebrand, there is at the present ime a Mrs.James A.Soper, yet no transformation has been chronicled in the press or told to admiring and congratulating friends. The preacher, whose name is guarded, the witnesses whoa re shrouded inmystery, and the silent church, the location of which is indefinite and vagu, alone bear testimony to the fact. On Saturdayafternoon there appeared at the hotel in Kalama aman and a woman,in testimony of which fact the register of that date bears the name sof Miss Hildebrand and James A.Soper, both of Portland. On the same afternoon there appeared at the desk of the County Clerk, in the same town, alovelorn twain and this is held in memory by a permit to wed issued to Miss Maidie Hidebrand and James A.Soper, both of Vancouver. On the same afternoon,at 4 o'clock, the happy young people left for Vancouver, bearing with them the precious paper which was soon to open to them the gates of domestic happiness and joy. But there it all ended and the happy romance passed silently from sight. Miss Maidie Hildebrand and James A.Soper came unwedded back to Portland and are now unwedded in the public eye. The romance was concluded on Saturday evening. As th ehour of the witches was drawing nigh, the silent church saw two more lives joined forever, the cautious minister received his fee and said nothing ,and the secret witness told a friend. And this is the story that he told: "there was a secret wedding tonight.I was the invited guest.James A.Soper and Miss Maidie Hildebrand were married, but the name of the minister,or the name of the church I will not tell. There were no guests present, non but the witnesses, the minister and the principals. The mother of the bride was at home. The wedding was secret, and the ceremony will be a secret for a few weeks yet, when it will be made pubic." Miss Maidie Hildebrand, the bride of this romantic marriage,is a well known young lady of Portland, the daughter of Mrs.Auguste Hildebrand, who conducts a millinery on Washington Street. The groom is a wealthy young lumberman who has for some time made his headquarters at the Portlnad Hotel. The marriage,so it is said, was not expected by the friends of either of the principals, and will be a surprise to all.
