He was a native of Germany, though of French ancestry, and was born April 18, 1819, being 83 years of age at his death. He came to the United States in 1847, settling in Illinois, but he soon emigrated to California. After spending a few years in the California gold fields, he came to Portland, in 1853, where he lived until 1862, when he removed to this city and purchased a large farm near Rickreall, Polk County, where he lived until 1893, when he came to Salem and resided until his death. On December 5, 1866, he married Mrs. Nancy J. Taylor, who crossed the plains from Illinois in 1862. He is survived by a widow and two daughters, Mrs. C.W. Stump, and Mrs. M.I. Capps, both of Salem. Burial services will be conducted at Rickreall on Monday.
