Preface

The contents of this Book, with a few alterations, first appeared in a series
of articles in the Sunday Oregonian of 1901.

This is not a history or a chronicle, but the recollections of incidents that
came under my personal observation, which, at this time, may be of interest,
both to the pioneers who are left and to the new corners.
