3 Sisters October 11, 1894
Another arrest was effected this afternoon in connection with the assasination 
of george W Sayres.it was that of X.N Steeves,the well known lawyer,and 
jointly with Bunko Kelly and Garthone,he is charged with murder.
Mr Steeves was taken before Chief of Police Minto at 1:30 o'clock this 
afternoon,and after a short interview was locked up in one of the strong cells 
without bail
Chief Minto ,for prudentail reasons,declined to disclose the nature of the 
evidence against Steeves at the present time,but intimated that he had good 
reasons for holding him.
Bunco Kelly,Bob Garthone and Sailor Burns,who are believed to know more about 
the actual commission o fthe murder than any other persons,have as yet shown 
no signs of weakening.They are subjected to interviews by the detectives and 
the chief several times a day but so far they have divulged nothing to fasten 
the crime on either
These fellows are in solitary confinement ,and it is confidently expected that 
one or the other will make a clean breast of the matter within the next 24 or 
48 hours,to help himself as much as possible
Primarily it was supposed that Garthorne would be the first to weaken,and tell 
but he hangs to his secret.If he has any,with more tenacity tahn he was given 
credit with having.
Bunco kelley is the shrewdest one in the lot,and if he is as deep in theplot 
as the ploice think,they opine that he will make an early request to become a 
state witness.
Chief Minto feels sure that one or two of the men he now has in custody have 
had  hand in the murder,and that the guilty one or ones cannot 
escape.Regarding the complicity of the others,as yet at large,the chief had 
nothing to say.It is known thoguh,that several men are under 
surveillance,who,if they attempt to leave the city,will at once be arrested.
(Steeves formerly lived in Salem and attended school at the university,but 
from those seen by a Statesman reporter last evening ,very few good words 
could be drawn relative to him.It seems he was not popular or well thought of 
here,but there was surprise expressed that he would be actively engaged in a 
murderplot.-Rep)
