Adkins Among the earliest settlers now living of the section that is embrace in Morrow county is the gentleman and esteemed pioneer whose name heads this article and whose life of unblemished rectitude and honor during the third of a century passed in this locality, has ever been a beacon light to show forth the principles of Christianity, while his industry and excellent capabilities have been manifested to be quite commensurate therewith. Mr. Adkins was born in Missouri on December 14, 1849, his parents being James A. and Susan (Kirk) Adkins, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky. At fourteen years of age he came with his parents across the plains, driving an ox team the entire distance. They first settled in Lane county, remaining there for three years, when our subject migrated to this section, the date being 1868. In Iowa and Oregon he acquired his education and when he arrived here went immediately into stock raising and farming, taking a homestead in June of that year, upon which he has remained continuously since. It is situated fifteen miles south from Ione on Rhea creek, and his additions by purchase have increased his realty holdings to fourteen hundred and eighty acres of fertile land. He raised about seventy-five acres of alfalfa and handles twenty-two hundred head of sheep, having recently reduced his number. He has a handsome residence in Heppner, where he resides most of the year, spending only three months on the ranch each year. Mr. Adkins is a member of the Prohibition party and is chairman of the county central committee of that party. He is also a member of the Methodist church, south, and always labors earnestly and unremittingly in its interests and affairs. His ability and faithfulness were rewarded by being chosen delegate to the general conference of that denomination, held every four years, the last meeting being in Baltimore, Maryland, in May, 1898. His fraternal affiliations are with the A.O.U.W. and the Maccabees. The marriage of Mr. Adkins and Miss Alice, daughter of James and Nancy (Bruce) McClure, natives of Indiana, was solemnized in November, 1875. They have become the parents of seven children: Margaret, Ora E., Bertha A., Olive, James R., Jesse A., and Harley M. In addition to his other extensive stock holdings our subject is breeding Poland China hogs and has some fine specimens. Mr. Adkins is a man of sterling integrity and probity and with ability far above the average, while his commendable career has given him a prestige well worth a life of service to obtain.
