ARNOLD It is now our pleasant duty to present an epitome of the successful agriculturist and business man whose name appears at the head of this article, and whose career of industry and careful enterprise has brought the reward of competence, while his integrity and intrinsic worth have commanded the respect and won the confidence of all who may have the pleasure of his acquaintance. His birth occurred in Lucas county, Iowa, on August 27, 1849, Thomas and Julia A. Arnold being his parents. In that state he received a good education from the common schools, and there remained until 1878, at which time he went to Colorado and engaged in raising stock. After following this successfully for twelve years he came to Oregon, settling in Umatilla county, and engaged in the cultivation of fruit. In 1898 he was called from this occupation by his fellows to take charge of the postoffice in Freewater, which position he accepted and sold his land, turning his attention to the general merchandise business in addition to the duties of the postoffice. He was married on July 18, 1880, to Rachel, daughter of Andrew J. and Nancy Patterson. To them have been born the following children: Lorena B.; Ralph D.; and three others who are deceased. Mr. Arnold is a member of the Maccabees in Freewater, and also devotes a proper and interested attention to the political matters of the state and county, believing that every citizen should accept his share of the responsibilities of governmental affairs. The people have manifested their appreciation of his abilities and uprightness by frequently electing him to the office of justice of the peace. He is interested in the town-site and has other property interests, while he has established a flourishing mercantile business that is constantly increasing, owing to the careful attention he pays to his business and fair treatment of every man with whom he has business transactions, while his geniality has won him friends from every rank.
