Borg To the esteemed and prominent business man whose name appears at the head of this article, we are glad to accord a representation in this volume, since his enterprise and excellent ability have placed him in the lead in the commercial line in this county, while his integrity and uprightness are unquestioned. The native land of Mr. Borg is Sweden, being born near Christianstod on September 30, 1840, and in that place he received a good education in the public schools and military academy, taking an exceptionally thorough course in the latter institution. Following this he served in the regular army as artilleryman for six years. In 1868 he turned from the scenes of home-land and sought the new world, stopping first in Chicago, where he operated as a jeweler for two and one-half years. From here he went to Carroll county, Missouri, and followed farming for ten years and then fitted an outfit and crossed the plains to Oregon. He took this means of traveling for the purpose of seeing the country, and occupied himself profitably for six months. Upon arriving in Heppner he opened a jeweler shop and has been continuously occupied in that business since, having prospered from the beginning and now does the entire business of the city and surrounding country. He owns the property where his business is carried on, on May street, and the adjoining property on the east and a fine residence on Main street. He also own a large stock ranch of eleven hundred and forty acres, stocked with cattle and horses. His horses are especially well bred, among which are some fine specimens. He carries a large and well assorted stock of goods of all kinds usually seen in jewelry stores. He held the office of second lieutenant of Company E, Third Regiment, Oregon National Guards and officiated as officer in charge when the company greeted the representatives of the railroad at the driving of the golden spike, which commemorated the completion of the line to this section. In 1894 he was elected mayor of Heppner and served in that capacity for one term. The marriage of Mr. Berg and Miss Annie Anderson occurred in Sweden in 1866. To them have been born four children: Matilda, wife of J. C. Swope, of Astoria; Carrie, wife of H.A. Wright, of Port Townsend, Washington; Frank, in the jewelry business in Missoula, Montana, being a graduate optician, jeweler and engraver from Parson's Horological Institute at Peoria, Illinois; Oscar, who works with his father and is a member of the city band, being an excellent musician. Mr. Borg affiliates with the Masons, having taken all the degrees and passed all the chairs up to and including the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite, his home membership being in Heppner Lodge, No. 69. He has been delegate to the grand lodge for a number of years. He also is a charter member of the K. of P., having passed all the chairs of that organization, and is a charter member of the B.P.O.E. His membership in religious matters is in the South Methodist church, where he is an active worker and an ardent supporter of his faith. He has so demeaned himself during his long residence in the county that he has won the respect and confidence of all who may have the pleasure of his acquaintance.
