Colbern Among the prominent and successful agriculturists of Umatilla county should be mentioned the gentleman whose name initiates this paragraph, as one not only achieving due financial reward for his meritorious industry but also possessing that courageous fortitude and fealty to Christian rectitude that mark one as a beacon light and giant power for the uplift and benefit of mankind. Mr. Colbern is the son of James and Jane (Templin) Colbern, natives of Tennessee, and was born in Miller county, Missouri, December 5, 1846. In this state he received a good education, derived largely from the common schools of the time, and entered upon the battle of life with energy and zest. The reports from the west caused him in 1874 to come to Baker county, this state, where he remained for four years, and then came to Umatilla county, settling upon a quarter section of railroad land, which he homesteaded as soon as it reverted to the government. He has added to this by purchase until he now owns two hundred and seventy-seven acres of fine wheat land, four miles north from Athena, and upon this he raises the best yields of wheat, averaging thirty- five bushels per acre annually. This excellent return testifies strongly of his wise husbandry and careful diligence. His marriage occurred October 12, 1873, when Miss Amanda Moseley, daughter of Parks and Martha Ann (Pearson) Moseley, became his wife. He has reared upon his farm a fine two-story residence, together with other improvements of a substantial character, as well as planting a fine orchard, all of which testify plainly of his good taste and practical ability. He always finds time to attend to the affairs of local interest and school matters as well as political questions in general, manifesting that concern and using that judgment that are commensurate with intelligent citizenship in this free land. He is a member of the Christian church in Athena, where he is ever showing forth that zeal and earnestness becoming the ardent Christian, and not alone are these qualities brought out in this capacity, for his general life is a consistent testimony to the living faith which he holds as the mainspring of his life and stands for upon every occasion.
