Day To the esteemed and prominent stockman and real-estate owner whose name initiates this paragraph we are pleased to accord space in the permanent chronicles of Morrow county, since his ability and energy and excellent financeiering have placed him as the happy possessor of a generous allowance of this world's goods, while his integrity and uprightness have ever given him the confidence of the people, which is fully merited. Mr. Day was born in Somerset county, Maine, on December 24, 1847, to Samuel and Fanny (Maloon) Day, the former being a native of Canada and of English extraction, and the latter a native of Maine. In the state of his birth he passed the years of his minority, acquiring the educational discipline to be gained in the common schools. In 1867 he migrated via the Isthmus to California, remaining there four years, engaged in the lumber business. In 1871 he returned to Maine, operating there in a lumber business for eight years, and then came to Oregon, settling on Little Butter creek, where he homesteaded a quarter section and also bought other land. Here he devoted himself to sheep raising, and although his capital was limited to his land, together with his own pluck, energy and courage, he has achieved a brilliant success. He now owns the old homestead and nineteen hundred acres besides, having recently sold most of his land. He also has nearly seven thousand sheep, thirteen hundred head of which are thoroughbred Delaine Merino bucks. Mr. Day has a fine trade in these thoroughbred sheep, supplying breeding animals throughout all portions of the sheep-raising sections of the west. He has a fine residence and eight acres of land in the city limits of Heppner, where he is living at the present time. He was married in Maine on September 20, 1873, to Miss Velzora Norton, daughter of Stephen and Elvira Norton. She joined her husband here in 1881. On August 12, 1884, she passed away and was buried in the cemetery on Butter creek. Mr. Day affiliates with the A.F. & A.M., Heppner Lodge, No. 69, and also with the Maccabees. He owns stock in the Morrow Land and Trust Company and is one of the directors of the company. Mr. Day was married a second time, on October 10, 1888, here in Heppner. Miss Didama Hart being the lady of his choice. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, being active in the interests of the same and an ardent supporter of her faith.
