DESPAIN A young business man of prominence among Umatilla’s force of gifted men, the man whose name is at the head of this article has already achieved a success in the management of one of the leading enterprises of the county, that presages a future career of brilliancy for him in the commercial world. Gifted and industrious, with a genial nature, while he is governed by the strictest moral integrity, he commands the respect and has won the confidence of all who have had to do with him, either in a social or business capacity. He was born in Lane county, to James T. and Lucinda Despain, on March 22, 1867, and taken when but an infant to Visalia, California, with his mother, who sought her health in that place. He remained there until her death, which occurred in 1872, and then was brought by his father to this county, where he was educated in the public schools until fourteen years of age. After this he went to the Big Bend country with his father, continuing for one year, and then engaged with his uncle, Jerry Despain, to herd sheep. Two years were spent in this work, when he started to raising horses for himself, following it for five years, and then turned his attention to buying and selling cattle, with Spokane and Seattle as his headquarters, operating in this business for six years. At the end of this time he went to Montana, engaging in mining and freighting, and two years later accepted a position in Spokane on the fire department under Chief Mayer. From this position he came to Ukiah to take an interest in the shingle mill and hay baler owned by his brother. The following year he became partner in the entire business, the firm being known as Despain Brothers. He was married in Ritzville, Washington, on December 4, 1890, to Miss Nellie Johnson, a native of Nevada, whose parents were pioneers to that state in a very early day. This union has been blessed by the advent of two children, Ethel A. and Jerry H., both in school in Ukiah. Mr. Despain affiliates with the I.O.O.F., Tribe No. 9, of Spokane.
