To many his ability will be better understood when we mention that he is descended from pure Irish blood, being born in county Donegal, Ireland, March 14, 1868. Here he received his education from the public schools, while he assisted his father on the farm. At the age of nineteen he came to Canada and thence to Umatilla county to join his brother Bernard, who had already been two years in this country. He first worked for James Nelson, on the farm next to the one he now owns, and after six months went to herding for Charles Cunningham, remaining there one year, when he hired to his brother in Morrow county. In the spring of 1890 these brothers sent for the balance of the family. In the fall of 1895 Bernard died, and our subject was made administrator of the estate, and in 1897 bought it, in connection with his two younger brothers, John and Joseph, with whom he formed a copartnership, the firm being known as Doherty Brothers, and entered the wool producing business. the original farm was nine hundred and sixty acres, which has been increased by purchase until they are now proprietors of a magnificent estate of over four thousand acres, which is utilized in handling their large bands of sheep, which have increased from the original number of eighteen hundred to over eight thousand. They sill retain the Morrow county estate, but now live three and one-half miles southeast from Vinson on one purchased from Samuel George. They formerly raised full-blood Merinos, but now are handling the thoroughbred Lincolns exclusively. In addition, they raise horses and cattle, owning one hundred and fifty of the former and sixty of the latter. The family are members of the Catholic church where they are highly esteemed, as well as throughout the entire community, while our subject, although but a young man, has manifested ability and executive administration second to none of his competitors, which will without doubt cause to be proffered to him flattering positions of public trust, which, it is hoped, he will consent to accept., , Since writing the above Mr. Doherty took a trip to Europe, leaving his ranch in July, 1901. He visited Chicago, Buffalo, New York and Boston, then repaired to Ireland, the land of his nativity. In his native county, Donegal, he was married to Miss Mary McLaughlin, in October, 1901. Mrs. Dorherty was born in the same county in 1882. While on this trip they visited Scotland and attended the Glasgow exposition, besides taking in many other sights and places of interest. Although the scenes of native land are good and memories of childhood's days are sweet, still Mr. Doherty is content to continue on his Umatilla county ranch and be, as he has been, one of the prominent men of the county.
