M. DOROTHY It is necessary, in order to be consistent with the general scope of our work, to incorporate in its pages an epitome of the interesting career of the gentleman whose name initiates this paragraph, and whose worthy efforts have been displayed in this region in its material welfare and substantial progress since an early day, he being one of those sturdy characters that left the comforts and emoluments of civilization’s scenes and pushed into the vast and comparatively unknown regions of the great west. Mr. Dorothy was born in Iowa on October 24, 1846, being the son of A. and Jamina (Bullington) Dorothy. His educational discipline was received in his native state, and there he remained until 1864, when he set out on the weary and arduous journey across the plains by ox-teams. His first stop was in Boise, where he worked in the mines for one year, and then came to Walla Walla. There he was engaged in cutting cord-wood on the place that he now owns. This occupation with logging in the mountains occupied him for a number of years, when he accumulated sufficient means to purchase land for himself. He first bought southwest from where he now lives, remaining there for five years. After that he sold out and purchased his present place of two hundred and thirty-seven acres, besides which he owns five hundred and seventy acres in the mountains, which is utilized for pasture. He raises many cattle and operates a dairy, and is also interested in the Milton creamery. His home place is finely improved with all necessary out buildings and utensils besides an elegant residence, all of which bespeak the taste and thrift and wisdom of Mr. Dorothy. In September, 1876, in this county, Mr. Dorothy and Miss Ella De Haven were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, and to crown the union there have been born the following children: W. W., married and living near; M. M., E. E., L. L., G. G., B. B., and D. D. Mrs. Dorothy is a native of Iowa, and her father, G. W. De Haven, now lives in Walla Walla, but her mother died some time since. Mr. Dorothy is one of the prominent and popular men of the county, having filled the important office of county commissioner as well as other positions of trust, in all of which he has displayed an ability and faithfulness deserving of commendation. In fraternal affiliations he is associated with the Masons. He is one of the substantial citizens of the county, and has always manifested good principles and sterling qualities and uprightness in all the affairs of life.
