EDWARDS Among the leading wool growers mention must be made of the subject of this sketch, whose career of industrious enterprise has placed him in a commanding position and given him the reward of large bands of fine sheep and a generous allowance of real estate. He was born near Martintown in Green county, Wisconsin, on January 11, 1866, remaining there until he was twenty years of age. During this time he received a good education in the schools of that vicinity, occupying the rest of his time in clerking in his father’s general store. At the age above mentioned he turned toward the west and commenced the battle of life for himself. His first location was at Echo, this county, where he commenced to herd sheep, following it for eight years continuously, thus gaining a thorough and practical knowledge of the business in all of its details. It is the wise and careful attention to the details of sheep raising that brings success, such as has attended Mr. Edwards from the outset. At the close of this novitiate service he entered into partnership with his brother, Thomas P., and together they have continued in sheep raising until the present. When coming to this state they were possessed of the capital of courage and willingness to work. From this they have steadily arisen until they own three thousand acres of fine land, and nearly four thousand head of well bred sheep. They handle Merinos principally, using grade Oxford bucks. The annual wool clip amounts to nine pounds per head. Our subject is the manager of the stock on the place, while the brother attends to the ranch, which is the old Brad Owens place on Owens creek, while they have additional land on Bear creek. In every respect this is a model sheep ranch. They have all buildings usually needed with the addition of a fine lambing camp shed, one hundred feet square, with eight covered catch pens on the range, where all needing attention can be accommodated, thus saving a large percentage of lambs that would otherwise be lost. When the bands started for the mountains in the spring of 1900 they had in increase of one hundred and three per cent of lambs of the entire band, a remarkable record for range sheep. Mr. Edwards, though a young man yet, has demonstrated what can be done by wisely attending to business, while his integrity and uprightness have won him many friends and he receives the respect and esteem of all, which is richly merited.
