M. ELAM To this prominent and influential citizen belongs, by right of merit, representation in this volume of his county’s history, both because of his prominence as a leader among his fellows and on account of his brilliant success in business matters, which is due to his masterly ability and tireless energy, while his upright and moral life has been exemplary throughout his long career in this county. He was born in Tennessee on June 4, 1840, receiving there a public- school education. In 1859, he removed to Texas, engaging in the stock business until the call came for recruits to join the ranks of the Confederate army. He enlisted in Company I, Nelson’s regiment, under Captain Fermault, serving throughout the war, participating in many battles and doing valiant military duty. In the battle of Arkansas Post almost his entire regiment was captured. He was in some of the principal battles of the war, where he and his comrades did such intrepid fighting that in overcoming it the Union soldiers received endless military renown. At the close of the struggle he repaired to his home in Texas and engaged in stock raising until 1867. At that date he crossed the plains with mule-teams and settled in this county, remaining one year and then went to Portland, where he engaged in the livery business for eight years. Succeeding this he returned to this county, occupying himself in farming until 1888. In this year he built the Peacock mills and has given his attention to milling since. He owns a one-half interest in this and the Eagle mills, which have a combined capacity of six hundred barrels per day, and are equipped with the most modern machinery made for the manufacture of flour from wheat. He owns about one thousand acres of land adjoining the town of Milton, and eighty-five lots in the city, besides two blocks and five acres in the Riverside addition to Milton. He also owns a one-seventh interest in the Bank of Milton and a fine residence in the city. Mr. Elam is one of the largest property owners in the county, having acquired it all by his own industry and good financiering. He was married in Texas, on September 8, 1865, to Martha L. Frazier, daughter of W. S. and Paulina Frazier. To this union have been born five children: Louverna, wife of J. H. Piper, of this county; Roberta, bookkeeper at the mill, having had practical charge of the entire business during the last six years; and three others deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Elam are members of the Christian church in Milton, taking a lively interest in all its affairs. He also affiliates with the Masonic fraternity in Milton, having joined it in Texas in 1867. He was the first mayor of the city, and has acted as councilman many terms since, always serving with that faithfulness and wisdom characteristic of him in all of his business transactions.
