Orville Elder Fourteen miles northwest from Pendleton lives the subject of this sketch, the son of Sylvester B. and Rebecca (Freed) Elder. He was born in the state of Ohio, Hancock county, on June 18, 1868, and lived there for nineteen years. The schools of his native state gave him his education as well as a great deal of practical training that has borne good fruit since. Having obtained a report of Umatilla county sufficiently good to arouse his desire to see it, he came direct from his birthplace to Pendleton and began to inspect this and adjacent counties. He found it all that he had hoped and even more, and at once selected the place where he now lives. He bought it and now owns, with his brother, a half-section of land. He gives his whole attention to wheat and stock raising, finding that he can best keep up his land in this manner and also that it is a first-class method of bringing good financial returns. He has a fine quality of stock, and is grading it up to a still greater state of perfection, having registered animals. He prefers the short- horn stock and has some fine animals and takes a great pride in them. There is no doubt that in the near future the attention of the farmer will be turned more and more to the industry of stock raising, even through this extensive wheat region. Mr. Elder is surely a pioneer in this excellent line and it will be of inestimable value to this county in the days to come. He finds time to take an active part in the local affairs and school matters, and is deeply interested in the welfare of the county at large. On April 7, 1895, he was married to Miss Mary A. Nicely, the daughter of Thomas and Mary E. (Vaughn) Nicely. They have four children: Lillian V., Leatha O., Perry O. and Esther E.
