Froome On the 26th of February last the town of Athena was called upon to mourn the loss of one who had been among its most esteemed and highly respected citizens for a period of twenty-two years. The date mentioned saw the demise of James W. Froome, who had undergone an operation for necrosis, which had necessitated the amputation of the leg just below the knee. Mr. Froome had been a strong man and gave every indication after the operation that he would recover, but the weight of eighty-one years and the effects of a previous operation proved too much for his constitution and he soon afterward passed away. Mr. Froome was born in Edwardsburg, Greenville county, Ontario, on December 11, 1819, and in the excellent public schools for which that province is noted he received his education. During his young manhood he followed steamboating on the St. Lawrence river. We have not the data at hand which would enable us to give a detailed account of his early life. In 1860 he came to the Pacific coast, and later with his family he settled near Dixon, California, and engaged in farming. He removed to Walla Walla in 1876, where his home was until 1879. In that year he removed to Athena, which continued to be his home until the date of his demise. He built the first hotel in what was in those days called Centerville, now Athena, and the acquaintance made during the years he was engaged in business was very extensive. His death therefore was a cause of sincere regret not alone in his home town and where ever he had lived but in many other parts of the state. For sixty years Mr. Froome had been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the funeral services were conducted by Revs. Deweesse and Rigby of that denomination. The capacity of the building was not adequate to seat all those who wished to show their respect to the deceased by attending his funeral. Many beautiful floral tributes were in evidence, and the Athena band, an organization toward which Mr. Froome had evinced friendliness, was present and rendered appropriate selections. On the thirty first of October, 1848, while yet in his native country, our subject married Miss Janet Irving, and to this union six children were born, three of whom, with their mother, preceded him to the tomb. The surviving children are George M., of Pendleton, and J. I. and J. E. of Athena. Additional Comments: An Illustrated History of Umatilla County by Colonel William Parsons and of Morrow County by W.
