C. Giger The well-known and leading business man of whom we now have the pleasure of writing occupies a prominent position in the county, and although not one of the earliest settlers, has nevertheless won a host of friends and the respect and esteem of all with whom he has had to do. A. C. Giger was born in Sangamon county, Illinois, on August 4, 1865, being the son of B. H. and Sarah A. Giger, who were of German extraction. They moved to Kansas in 1878 and engaged in farming, where our subject grew to manhood and received a good education in the public schools, graduating from the high school in Cawker City, After this he taught school for two years and then entered into the employ of the First National Bank of that place. Three years he served there and was then called to fill the position of cashier of the State Bank in Glasco, Kansas, where he continued for eight years. In 1895 he came to Oregon, spending the first winter in Salem. The following year he opened a department store in The Dalles and did business there for four years, then sold out and bought George Whiteis' stock of goods in Heppner. He is now carrying a full line of merchandise, except groceries, his place of business being in the Heppner Bank building on Main street. He here operates the largest department store off the main line of the railroad in Oregon. Mr. Giger was married in Kansas on December 24, 1890, to Miss Lillie B., daughter of Henry H. and Mary M. (Copeland) Spalding. To them have been born two children, Roscoe E. and A. Charlotte. Mrs. Giger is a niece of the Rev. William Spalding, who came to Oregon with Marcus Whitman. Mr. Giger is active in fraternal affiliations, being a member of the Masonic order and having passed all of the degrees up to the Mystic Shrine. He has also held the position of worshipful master in the blue lodge. He is a member of the K. of P. in Kansas as well as of the Eastern Star and Rathbone Sisters and has attended the grand lodges a number of times. His strict adherence to upright business principles and uncompromising integrity have won for him a large and increasing patronage, which is fully merited.
