To the famous Emerald Isle we are indebted for many of our most substantial citizens, and among the number is to be chronicled Mr. Gilfillin, whose birth occurred in the land of Goldsmith and Emmett, on September 4, 1861. His early boyhood was passed in that country and then he set out to seek his fortune in this land of freedom. He landed on Butter creek in Morrow county and for one year was engaged for wages, after which he entered the employ of Michael Kenny for a time and then bought his present place, twelve miles south and east from Heppner. Here he has a fine large estate of nine hundred and sixty acres of land and handles nearly two thousand head of sheep. His industry, thrift and good financiering are markedly manifest in the accumulation of these excellent holdings when we consider that he entered the county without capital except two good hands and an unbounded store of pluck. In fraternal affiliations he is associated with the K. of P. Additional Comments: An Illustrated History of Umatilla County by Colonel William Parsons and of Morrow County by W. S.
